Alamance Parks Awarded Recreational Trails Program Grant for First Phase Development of the
Cane Creek Mountain Natural Area

GRAHAM, N.C.– Alamance Parks has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Recreational Trails Program in order to begin the first phase of development of the Cane Creek Mountain Natural Area. Initial development will include the first trailhead and trails of the new nature park. The Cane Creek Mountains are located 8 miles south of the City of Graham and comprise the largest State Natural Heritage Area in Alamance County. The mountain range is also home to the highest peak in North Carolina east of Greensboro.

The Cane Creek Mountains are a unique and invaluable natural resource. Development of the park will protect the resources of this area while allowing for recreational and educational use of the property. Ultimately, Alamance Parks hopes to develop between 10-15 miles of trail network through the Cane Creek Mountain Natural Area properties. Upon completion, the Cane Creek Mountain Natural Area will be among the largest county parks in the state.

The Cane Creek Mountain Natural Area is a partnership between The Conservation Fund, Piedmont Land Conservancy, and Alamance Parks. Additional funding support has been received from Clean Water Management Trust Fund and private donors. If you are interested in providing support to help us complete this project, contact Alamance Parks at 336-229-2410.

Development of the park will begin in early 2019.

10 Tips for Election Day Voters

RALEIGH, N.C. – The State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement offers the following 10 tips for voters as they head to the polls on Election Day – Tuesday, November 6.

1)      Polls across North Carolina are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters in line at 7:30 p.m. will be able to cast a ballot. Lines tend to be longer before and after normal business hours.

2)      Statewide, about 2,700 precincts will be open Tuesday. Find your Election Day polling place here: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/PPLkup/. Voters may vote in another precinct in their county of residence. However, to ensure you receive your full ballot, go to the precinct for the address where you lived on October 7, 2018.

3)      Sample ballots are available through the State Board’s Voter Lookup tool here:https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/.

4)      Same-day registration is not available on Election Day.

5)      Information about judicial candidates and the six constitutional amendments on the ballot is here:https://www.ncsbe.gov/Portals/0/Documents/2018_Judicial_Voter_Guide_(online).pdf.

6)      Voters who need assistance at the polls must request that assistance. Individuals who are unable to enter the polling place may vote curbside. Once inside the polling place, voters who experience difficulties should request help from a poll worker.

7)      The State Board asks that all voters respect the right of others to participate in the election. Intimidating any voter is a crime. Voters who feel harassed or intimidated should notify an election official immediately.

10)   Election results will begin posting after 7:30 p.m. at http://er.ncsbe.gov/.

2019 Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment

2019 Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment
Enrollment for 2019 Opens November 1

BURLINGTON – The 2019 open enrollment period for health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace (Marketplace) is taking place November 1, 2018 until December 15, 2018.

Many features of the ACA still remain in place for 2019. Financial help with premiums and cost-sharing (help with out-of-pocket costs such as co-pays and deductibles) are still available to consumers. People with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage, and young adults can stay on their parent’s plan until they turn 26. All insurance plans on the Marketplace must cover doctor visits, prescription drugs, emergency room visits and hospital stays, birth control and pregnancy care, and treatment for mental illness or substance abuse.

All consumers, new and renewing, should return to the Health Insurance Marketplace during Open Enrollment to explore their options and enroll in health coverage. Plans and prices change every year, but it is important to make sure the plan you had in 2018 is still right for 2019.

April Durr, Director of Community Impact for United Way of Alamance County and a member of the ACA Workgroup, stated, “with the shorter open enrollment period this year, it is important for people to set up an appointment with a navigator soon if they need help signing up for health insurance. Getting people insured at a price their family can afford meets United Way’s goal to increase access to health care.” It is necessary to act early and meet with a navigator if you need assistance.

Free, LOCAL and trained in-person assistance is available to help people understand their options and enroll in coverage. Assistance is also available through other agencies representing the ACA Workgroup: Legal Aid Navigators are offering appointments at the Family Justice Center, Piedmont Health has appointments available at their Community Health Centers, and appointments are available at the Health Department. Trained personnel can guide consumers through the application process and answer questions they may have about the Marketplace. Please visit www.getcoveredamerica.org/connector to schedule an appointment with a local assister or contact one of the local resources.

Misty Drake, Chief Operating Officer of Piedmont Health Services stated “we are committed to servicing all residents in Alamance and other counties. A person does not need to be a Piedmont Health patient to receive this free service. Don’t wait, schedule an appointment soon.”

For more information about the ACA, go to www.healthcare.gov.
