Health Department Begins Offering Vaccinations for 2021 Flu Season

Flu Shots Now Available to the Public

Flu season is upon us and the Alamance County Health Department wants you to protect yourself and your family. Thursday, October 7, the health department will begin offering appointments for seasonal flu shots to the public.

This year, the health department will be providing the following vaccine options to the public:

  • Quadrivalent flu vaccine injection which covers four strains of influenza
  • Flublok flu vaccine injection which is recommended for people with egg allergies that are ages 18 years and older
  • High Dose Trivalent vaccine which covers three strains and is recommended for people over 65 years

The vaccine is available while supplies last. One shot is all most people will need. Children under age 9, who have not previously been vaccinated against the flu, may need two doses.

The flu shot is available this year at no cost to the public by appointment only at the following times:

Monday – Friday (excluding holidays)

  • o 8:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
  • o 1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.

Increase your chances of keeping the flu away by getting the vaccine. Also, remember to wash your hands often, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home if you are sick to help stop the spread of illness. Mobile Library Grand Opening

Join the Alamance County Public Libraries as we celebrate the kick-off of our new Mobile Library service! Our new vehicle, with more than 1500 items on board, will visit more than 40 sites across Alamance County in a three-week rotation, including schools, retirement communities, parks, community centers, and rural and urban neighborhoods.

Our kick-off celebration will take place at Fairchild Community Center, 827 S. Graham Hopedale Rd., in Burlington from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 1, 2021. We’ll start with thanking our sponsors and a ribbon cutting, followed by family-friendly fun and games, an outdoor Storytime, and, of course, time to explore and check out the Mobile Library.

The Mobile Library will provide full library services, including signing up for a library card, checking out materials, placing and picking up holds, using computers, and even attending programs at select stops. The Mobile Library is handicapped accessible, with a lift in the back of the vehicle for wheelchairs. Spanish language materials for children and adults are available as well.

Library cards are available free of charge for anyone who lives or works in Alamance County. Children who attend an ABSS school or many of the partnering private and charter schools in the county already have a library card through the ACPL Connect program. They can use their lunch number (or other number, as assigned by their school) to check out up to 10 items.

ACPL borrowing privileges are also available to residents in the surrounding counties of Guilford, Rockingham, Caswell, Orange, Chatham, and Randolph. All patrons are encouraged to speak with a staff member with any questions about their accounts. Happy reading to all.

Booster Shots of Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine Now Available for High-Risk Groups

On September 24, CDC recommended that certain populations receive a booster shot of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after completion of their two-dose Pfizer COVID-19
vaccine series.

People who should receive a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine booster include:

  • People ages 65 and older
  • People 18+ living in long-term care settings
  • People ages 50–64 with an underlying medical condition

People who may receive a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine booster:

  • People ages 18–49 with an underlying medical condition
  • People ages 18–64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure & transmission due to working or residing in certain settings

COVID-19 vaccination appointments for first, second, third, and booster doses can be made through thevonline appointment system located at www.vaccinatealamance.com. For those without internet access, the COVID-19 vaccine call center is available Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm to schedule appointments.

The number to call for an appointment is 336-290-0650.

Alamance County Health Department will be administering COVID-19 booster shots at a drive through COVID-19 booster clinic at The Village Market Place, 1003 W. Main St., Haw River 27258 for a limited time. An appointment is required.

If you make an appointment and are unable to keep it, or if you choose to receive your vaccination elsewhere, please call 336-290-0650 to cancel the appointment. This will help to alleviate the possibility of vacant appointment times.

The public will be informed of any changes and updates through the Health Department website, social media, and the local news media.

Vice-Chair Steve Carter Sworn in as ACC Board of Trustees Member

Alamance County Commissioner Chairman John Paisley, Jr. swore in Vice-Chairman Steve Carter today as a new member of the Alamance Community College Board of Trustees.  Vice-Chair Carter will serve as the County Commissioner representative on the Board of Trustees.  Not only will Vice-Chair Carter serve as a Trustee, he will be a member of the ACC Building and Grounds Committee.

“I’m really looking forward to being a bonafide member of the ACC Board of Trustees”, said Vice-Chair Carter.  He has served and attended meetings as a liaison for the past several months so he is familiar with campus business.

2021 Purchase of Development Rights, Alamance County Farmland Preservation Program Application Sign up

The Alamance County Voluntary Agricultural District Board (VAD) will be accepting applications for the Purchase of Development Rights, Alamance County Farmland Preservation Program Sept.1st – Sept. 30, 2021.  The applications can be picked up or emailed from the Alamance Soil and Water Office starting September 1st, 2021.

 Applications must be returned to the Alamance SWCD Office at 209 N Graham Hopedale Road, Burlington, NC 27217, beginning Sept. 1st with a deadline of Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021 @ 5:00PM.

The NC Dept. of Agriculture and Community Services Farmland Preservation Trust Fund anticipates having funding statewide to fund applications in the 2021-2022 cycle.  The Alamance County VAD Board will select the top applicants from the applications received based on the VAD Ranking System.  North Carolina leads the Southeast in lost farmland and Family farms.  This funding is made available to encourage farmland preservation and protection.

Boil Water Notice for the City of Burlington

E. coli/fecal coliform found in the water distribution system

The City of Burlington has implemented a boil water notice due to E. Coli/fecal coliform bacteria
found at a specific location in the city of Burlington water system.

E. coli/fecal coliform bacteria can cause illness for individuals with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of E. coli infection may vary, but could include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and
vomiting.

City of Burlington has advised that residents should boil their drinking water until further notice.
Additionally, the State of North Carolina advises impacted residents to boil all water used for
human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food
preparation) or use bottled water. Residents should boil their water for at least one minute; this
should help kill any disease-causing organisms that are potentially present in the water.

With a positive E.coli, those businesses permitted by the Health Department, restaurants, lodging
and tattoo parlors, and are customers of the city of Burlington must suspend operations until the
boil water notice is lifted and post event procedures are followed.

For general guidelines on how to lessen the risk of infection contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water
Hotline at 1-800-426-479. Any questions or concerns regarding food and lodging facilities can be
addressed by calling 336-290-0653. Alamance County Environmental Health has a hotline
available to assist.

City of Burlington residents can contact the City of Burlington’s Customer Service Line at 336-
222-5100 or monitor the City’s website at www.BurlingtonNC.gov/Water.

Cost Share Funds Announcement

The Alamance Soil and Water Conservation District anticipates receiving its cost share allocation from the State to assist with nonpoint source pollution control from agricultural activities. The funds are available to assist farmers to install conservation practices which help decrease the amount of sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus, chemicals and other pollutants in the surface and ground waters of our state.

The District anticipates to receive funding for the program year 2022 in July, 2021.  Landowners and operators of existing agricultural operations may apply for cost share assistance to install conservation practices such as grassed waterways, sowing crop fields to grass or trees, livestock exclusion and many more.

Applications for assistance will be accepted starting in July. With limited funding expected, farmers and producers are encouraged to contact the Alamance Soil and Water Conservation District office as soon as possible, the contact information is as follows:
