NCDOT Working on Debris Cleanup Plan for Orange, Alamance and Guilford Counties

Raleigh – The N.C. Department of Transportation is developing a plan to clean up debris along state-maintained roads in Orange, Alamance and Guilford counties, the areas hardest hit by last week’s icy winter storm.

Department crews continue to clear any debris that may have fallen onto state-maintained roads, cutting up trees and branches and pushing them off to the side of the roadway. The pickup of that debris, as well as the vegetation debris residents who live along those roads place beside the roadway will be handled by contractors.

NCDOT staff is determining a cost estimate of the cleanup effort so it can award an emergency contract for debris removal. The Governor’s State of Emergency declaration last week enables NCDOT to waive the usual contract bidding process, which would take several weeks.

Once a contract is awarded, which could be by late next week, a schedule for debris pickup will be set.

In order to expedite pickup, residents in the three counties who live on state-maintained roads are asked to place debris along the side of the roadway as soon as possible. Do not place debris in travel lanes or in areas where it will block drainage or reduce visibility for motorists and pedestrians.

Please keep the following in mind while collecting debris for removal.

•   Check your homeowners insurance as often debris cleanup is covered by insurance and arrangements for its collection would be handled by the insurance company;

•    NCDOT will only collect vegetation debris such as trees and limbs; and

•    Property owners are asked to cut storm-related vegetation debris into five- or six-foot pieces, if possible.

Stay Safe During Winter Weather

Our Fire Marshal’s office has a lot of good information on staying safe during winter weather.

Caution: Carbon Monoxide Kills

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal¬ burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.
  • The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire.
  • Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.
  • If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.
  • Call for help from the fresh air location and remain there until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.

Wind Chill Advisory for Monday night (1/6) and Tuesday (1/7)

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for tonight (1/6) through tomorrow (1/7) for an unusually cold arctic air mass combined with gusty winds. These conditions will result in an extremely cold wind chill of 0 to -10 degrees starting late tonight and lasting until tomorrow around noon. A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chill readings. If you must be outdoors tonight and Tuesday morning, make sure to wear several layers of clothing in addition to a hat and gloves.

Please limit outdoor exposure during these times to prevent extreme cold related illnesses such as frost bite and hypothermia.

For information on how to better prepare for extreme cold weather and cold weather safety information, please read this brochure from FEMA.  Be sure to pay special attention to weather forecasts and updates as they become available from the National Weather Service, local media outlets and the Alamance County Emergency Management’s Office.
